About The Company

About us.

The Ladybird Company is a  love letter  to the healing traditions of those who came before us.

.

Midwives, folk healers, wise folk. Ancestors who carried the wisdom of the earth in weathered hands; tending the sacred flame of this knowledge not in schools, but in the home. This knowledge was woven into the fabric of daily living; key not only to survival, but to everyday well-being. Medicine was not a transaction to be made across counters, but a gift, freely given by the divine earth. â€‹

.

For those who listen, the earth still whispers.

.

She speaks of a time, not long ago, when the power of healing was in the hands of the people. When we did not see ourselves as separate, but as a true and sacred part of the natural cycle. When we knew abundance came not from profit, but from relationship.  When we did not see our world as a collection of resources to be extracted.

.

The Ladybird Company was born of this remembrance.

.

Founded in 2025 by Mackenzie Laurin, The Ladybird Company offers a collection of handcrafted goods inspired by old ways and made for modern life: herbal wellness products, medicinal plant seeds, natural home and body care, low-waste essentials, and nutrient-dense pantry staples. Each item is rooted in respect for the earth, thoughtfully crafted with love and intention, and meant to nourish the spirit as much as the body. Alongside these, we curate a selection of non-fiction books and kitchen & apothecary tools.

.

Outside of the retail space, Mackenzie leads classes, workshops, educational nature walks, and other events rooted in ecology, heritage, and hands-on learning.

.

Through the reclamation of traditional knowledge, and the insights of modern research, The Ladybird Company seeks to bring household healing into the modern home. This desire, to place the power of healing once again in the hands of the people, is the beating heart of the company.

Mackenzie Laurin

Mackenzie is the founder, horticulturist, and practicing herbalist behind The Ladybird Company; where her work is a reflection of her lifelong study of the natural world.

In 2021, she graduated from the Horticulture Technologist diploma program at Olds College, where she focused her studies on native ecosystem restoration, permaculture, and ethnobiology. Following college, she continued her education through independent study, fieldwork, and everyday practice; delving into the studies of herbal medicine, nutrition, and the biological sciences. She began to explore the threads that weave together health, ecology, and culture; it was in this intersection that The Ladybird Company was born.

Matthew Grant

Bendick

The Ladybird Company runs on a lot of heart- and the occasional bit of unpaid labour. As far as overworked and underpaid assistants go, Matthew Grant tops the list. Partner to Mackenzie and steadfast supporter of her every wild idea, Matthew Grant is the invisible and uncomplaining hand behind much of the heavy lifting, problem-solving, and product testing that keeps the business running smoothly.

A gifted horticulturist in his own right, you may occasionally find him joining Mackenzie on the trail, contributing his knowledge, especially of trees.

Bear

Meet Bear- The Ladybird Company's resident morale officer and occasional field assistant. Bear takes her duties extremely seriously- especially those that involve hitting the trail and having a little treat. She can often be found happily accompanying Mackenzie to plant walks and outdoor classes; keeping a quiet watch and signaling Mackenzie when it's time to take a break.

Equal parts beloved friend, guardian, and squirrel enthusiast, Bear brings joy and a sense of gentle grounding to everyone she meets. While she loves making new friends, while she's working, Bear's primary job is to focus on Mackenzie, alerting her to changes in her heart rate. This is necessary for everyone's safety, so we kindly ask that you not disturb her on trail, and are patient as she trains for this important task.
